Over time the original fireplace was reduced in size. Unfortunately the structural lintel (the big horizontal stone)is cracked down the middle... |

... so it had to come out: without anything above it falling down. |

A new concrete lintel is now in place. |
|

The flue liner has now been cut to length, and the bottom secured with a home-made bracket. Quite chuffed with this bit of metal work. |

In preparation for the new sandstone jambs (the vertical bits at the side of the fireplace opening) the existing jambs need trimmed. Bit difficult to see, but a line of drill holes perforates the jamb.. |

... allowing the unwanted section to be easily removed. This picture also shows the new concrete sub-hearth : the white pipes give additional ventilation required for the wood-burning stove. |
